GHIL-MWF Delhi Joint Fellowship on "The British Empire and the History of Colonialism"


The GHI London- India Research Programme and the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies New Delhi invite applications for their joint fellowship for early career scholars whose research is situated in the broad field of the British Empire and the History of Colonialism.

The fellowship is open to post-doctoral/early career scholars from universities and other academic research institutions in Germany who wish to spend time in the UK and India for any of the following purposes:

  • Preparing for a research project
  • Archival visits
  • Networking with scholars in India and the UK
  • Writing an article or a part of a book

The fellowship will be awarded for a total of 3 months and can be taken up at any time during the calendar year 2026. The selected candidates will be expected to spend at least one month each in London and New Delhi. A postponement of the fellowship beyond December 2026 is not possible.

Eligibility to apply

The fellowship is meant primarily for early career scholars working on the history of the British Empire and its colonies. A focus on colonial India is desirable but not essential and transcolonial perspectives are welcome. You must have completed your PhD no earlier than 6 years from the application deadline and you must have obtained your degree at the time of application.

  • Complete curriculum vitae
  • List of publications
  • A project proposal of around 3000 words with an abstract of around 300 words and a plan of work
  • Two references

All materials should be uploaded in the application form by 26.09.2025.

Funding

The funding for the Fellowship is as follows:

  • A monthly stipend of 2600€ in London and 2200€ in Delhi
  • A lump sum of 1200 € towards travel costs
  • Childcare costs: An allowance in the form of a monthly lump sum is paid for children under 18 years of age: €300 per month is payable for the first child, and €100 per month for each additional child.
  • Reimbursement of visa costs up to 200€
